Tips: "Title begins with..." searches

Close this window

Use the Title begins with... search to find a specific item when you know at least the first few words of its title. This search finds items in Pathfinder whose titles begin with the words you type. It ignores the words A, An, or The at the beginning of a title, so you may include these or leave them out.

It's usually a good idea to end your search with an asterisk  *  immediately after the last word, with no spaces between. Pathfinder reads the  *  as a wildcard truncation symbol, and will retrieve titles that begin with the words you type, no matter what other words come after.

Example

This search:    for whom the bell
will NOT retrieve For Whom the Bell Tolls

but this search:    for whom the bell*
WILL retrieve For Whom the Bell Tolls
as well as For Whom the Bell Tolls: Ernest Hemingway's Undiscovered Country

Exception

If the title you're searching contains only one word, such as Howl, search it as howl (with no  * ) for best results.

Finding articles

Pathfinder does not list individual journal articles; to find these, use article databases instead.

Note for experienced users

The Title begins with... search was formerly called Title phrase; the results are the same.
