Tips: "Subject keyword" searches

Close this window

Use the Subject keyword search to find items on a subject. The subject terms (or "headings") are assigned according to a subject list created by the Library of Congress. If you don't find enough material with this search, try a Title keyword search and click on the titles of interesting items to see what subjects they were assigned. You can then click on these subjects to search for similar items.

"Subject keyword" search example
You want to find items about bilingual education.

  1. In the search box, type:   bilingual education
  2. Click on Subject keyword(s).
  3. Click on the Search button.
Pathfinder will retrieve all items in the catalog whose subject headings include both these words.

With and Near

If your subject contains the word with or near, leave it out of your keyword search or you may get unexpected results. If your keyword search retrieves too many items, choose the Advanced Search option and try a Subject begins with... search where these words can be used normally. With and near have special functions in Pathfinder keyword searches. For more information, see Order & Closeness (proximity).
