Tips: "Journal Title begins with..." searches

Close this window

Use the Journal Title begins with... search to find a journal, magazine, newspaper, etc, when you know at least the first few words of its title. Pathfinder does not list individual articles; to find these, use article databases instead.

Example
You want to find the New York Times.

  1. In the search box, type:   new york times
  2. Click on Journal Title begins with...
  3. Click on the Search button.

Truncation

If you end your search with an asterisk  *  immediately after the last word, with no spaces between, Pathfinder will retrieve titles that begin with the words you type, no matter what other words come after. In the example above, searching new york times* would fine all journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. in the catalog whose titles begin with new york times. This will include the New York Times itself, plus New York Times Book Review, New York Times Magazine, etc.

However, truncation is usually not necessary if you are looking for a specific, known journal title. If you are looking for a short journal title that is also a common word, such as Nature, Science, or Time, it's better to leave off the truncation symbol.

Note for experienced users

The Journal Title begins with... search gets the same results as doing a Title begins with... search (formerly called Title phrase) and limiting the results to the publication format "Journal Titles".
