Stop Words

Close this window

Certain common words are excluded from searches in any of the keyword indexes in Pathfinder, so it is unnecessary to type them in. The excluded "stop words" are:

a an and are as at be but by for
from had have her his in is it not of
on or that the this to was which with you

If you wish to search using one of these stop words, you must generally put quotation marks around it.

Example
You want to find the book Not a Free Show. Since not is a stop word, you will get the best results in either a Title keyword or Title begins with... search if you use quotation marks:  "not" a free show

Because of the very large number of items involved, "english" is a stop word in the language index. Thus if you want to limit to English language materials, use the limits option instead of searching by language. For other languages you have the option of either searching by language or of limiting to that language.
