Combining Keywords

Close this window

Pathfinder uses the words and, or, and not as "Boolean operators" to specify relationships among the words in a keyword search. This lets you get very precise results.

Searches with AND

  • Whenever you enter two or more keywords with nothing between then, Pathfinder assumes that they are combined with AND. This finds records that contain both words. You do not need to type the word AND.

    Examples:
Title keywords  civil war - to find items with both civil and war in the title
Subject keywords  civil war - to find items with both civil and war in the subject headings

Searches with OR

  • Use OR to find records that contain either word.

    Example:
Title keywords  gettysburg or murfreesboro - to find items with either word in the title

Searches with NOT

  • Use NOT to find only records that contain the first word but not the second word.

    Examples:
Title keyword  bear - to find all titles with the word bear
Title keywords  bear not polar - to find titles with bear but without the word polar
